FYI everyone this was posted by me, Chris Smith. Due to technical issues with my password I had to post under Camilla’s account. Thanks.

Very informative discussion. I agree that we need to participate in pro bono and humanitarian design, but I think it is difficult to find the one “job” that will fit your firm. The firm I work for is relatively small, but it is not motivated in any way to give back to the community. We have one employee who continually brings up weekend projects for the firm to participate in and no one will assist. There are families with soccer, baseball and camping trips planned.
I think the 1% initiative is a great way for a firm to make a public promise that holds it accountable to commit some part of its time to the community.
    thanks for the discussion.

I agree with you Frankie that it is increasingly difficult for designers to make more time after work + family. I was curious if firms could use slower times, for instance near Christmas, where the entire firm takes a day off to work on pro bono projects?

Once I graduate and travel back to Hong Kong, I would definitely promote Pro Bono work to design firms in H.K, especially smaller / younger firms. It is a great way to get recognition. Thank you for sharing Chris.

The design industry is really reaching a new age. People are beginning to have more respect for designers and what creativity can accomplish. As this progresses, more firms will have the funds and time available to promote pro bono work more regularly, thus making for a better society.

actually , Pro Bono work don’t exist in Jordan, but i’ll try my best to promote for it as Leslie mentioned. What if each kind of business, like doctors, teachers, and even accountants, did a Pro Bono work, I guess the society would be a better place to live in it. Don’t you agree?
