Environmental psychology as a professional term sounds far away from everyone’s daily life. Even if it becomes popular topic talked about in variety of disciplines in recent years, majority of people still hover about the surface.
As my own experience, I have discussed the issues and topics related to environmental psychology in several classes. Red means passion, green means peace; black implies evil, and white involves sanctity. We always rashly accept the previous general research result, and pretend that we understand environmental psychology. However, we neglect some significant component of environmental psychology is perspective and cognition belong to very personal things. Any rules cannot be directly used before carefully investigation and analysis for actual environmental condition and users’ needs.
In the class exercise of sensory abilities loss, I experience some feeling as a blind person. Except the inconvenience and nerves in activities, I found other sensory organs become much more sensitive when I lose the visual ability. For example, when I walked from classroom through hub to the elevator and then library, I focused on my every step. Therefore, the floor materials impressed me very much. Carpet, wood floor and ground tile, each texture defines a particular area. I understood I approached into another space when the floor texture that my feet toughed changing. So in the universal design, we consider increase other sensory stimuli and guide for people who have one sensory ability loss.
