Planning for Masters of Fine Arts in interior design curriculum for our contemporary issue class drove my attention to the fact that how different a certain program can be taught. There is so many different curriculum from the one that we have here in other universities. Some offer less elective classes, some have more internship opportunities and some are related to technology or other special topics.
When I was searching for Masters of Fine Arts in interior design I came up with two different PhD in interior design that was so interesting for me. Because as we talked in the class we believed that there is just one PHD in interior design, but I found two in my research. One was the online course in Atlantic International University in the School of social and human studies. It was explained as custom made program. Development of courses is collaborative activity that is going on between the student and academic adviser. The result would be the unique curricula for each student.
The other one was in Eastern Michigan University which offers the PHD in philosophy with focus on interior design. I think that would be more theory base program for who interested in philosophical interpretation of interior spaces. This program seems an attractive interdisciplinary program that give students depth of knowledge in two different majors.
As a whole providing curriculum that fulfill all needs of interior design’s students in higher level of education and give them the different range of knowledge would be so hard to accomplish. I believe based on the expectation of different students there should be variety of programs that serve students who are coming to study this major with different backgrounds and expectations.
