In the class we talked about certification in the interior design and NCIDQ exam. So I become curious to know more about other kinds of certification. In my research I came across with certification for interior decorators. I have never thought that would be any certification for interior decorators. We always think that interior designer should be certified because they are dealing with safety and health issue, but what about interior decorators?

Charlotte Jensen (FASID Past President of the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) saying that: “As NCIDQ and the professional associations IIDA, ASID, ICD and IDEC have been working to raise the bar for the interior design profession, other associations have been focusing on establishing credentials for the decoration industry. Any industry that decides to create guidelines and raise the professionalism of its industry deserves commendation – and the decoration community deserves no less.”
Certified interior decorators international (CID) is founded in 1997 by notable interior designer Ron Renner. Certified interior decorators international devoted to talented people who are seeking training in interior decoration and want become certified professionals. Ron Renner established this certification due to the confusion about the difference between designers and decorators. So CID for the first time in the history taking test from interior decorators and giving them certification. Some of the other opportunities that CID certification brings for interior decorators is helping them to be recognized as professionals for the industry and increase their income.
The other interesting thing about CID is that it founded by a notable Interior designer. Ron Renner is the member of ASID, and is certified by the National Council for Interior Designers (NCIDQ) and also he is one of the nation’s first state license interior designers. So by all these information about the CID, I think that existence of this kind of certification would be so beneficial for interior design industry. It helps separating the interior design and interior decoration profession in a most logical way. Maybe by having much more of this kind of certification there will be no misconception for people to call interior designers as an interior decorators.

Unfortunately many interior decorators feel that they are entitled to use the term “interior designer” when they do not understand the difference. A professional interior designer can decorate. A professional interior decorator cannot do interior design.
